Patio Inspiration

Since we now enjoy sun for more than just a three month period… (Praise the Lord! Hallelujah!) I have been dreaming of a Patio that can be used as an extension of the living room. I love outdoor spaces, but I’ve never invested the time (and money) into decorating one in Seattle because I knew it wouldn’t be put to good use.

While I told my loving husband that my dream was to decorate a patio for my birthday, I also understood that that is a large undertaking, and a costly one at that. But every step in that direction puts a smile on my face.

The biggest challenge for me in moving from a 1600 square foot home to a 950 square foot apartment has been entertaining a group of friends. I love to have people over. I love to throw parties. But I don’t feel like I have the space to do it. (For the record, I try not to let that deter us from having people over…but it does make me hesitate.)

My current living room situation is simple – a sofa, two chairs, an entertainment stand that does not fit (and currently resides in front of the fireplace) and not much more. (Ok a little bit more. Like boxes of baby clothes I’m attempting to downsize for the 5th time. And a tote of children’s books I need a storage solution for.) But I imagine opening up that sliding door to see more seating outside! So now to share a bit of the inspiration for my someday space…

Even after a lengthy explanation of my dreamy Pinterest board, I felt that I wasn’t describing the oasis that I dreamed up in my head accurately enough. So I sketched it out. For myself, mostly… But also, for anyone who was interested… And just in case my husband ever felt like surprising me…

Please forgive my not-to-size rough sketch…

Of course it will probably start with some simple seating and work its way out from there. And if you know me…you know that my vision tends to evolve as time goes on. But I’m excited to get started. Every project completed feels like one step closer to making this rental feel like home.

I’ll continue to update you as I work towards that goal, but in the meantime I’d love to hear from you. Can you envision my dream patio? What do you think makes a perfect patio?
