If we chatted over coffee and you asked me about my interests, chances are hiking would have never come up. I have always detested the thought!
It’s true! I’m the only daughter of 5 kids and growing up, my family all adored the great outdoors. They are also all naturally athletic, while I am the queen or tripping on her own feet or rolling her ankle while going for a stroll. So I have that going for me!
My dad and brothers always loved long, challenging hikes and I would usually end up in tears halfway through. The last time I remember hiking with my family was when I was in high school. My dad told me it would be an easy mile… But then three miles in we hadn’t even reached the “top” and I lost my damn mind. (I also have a tendency to be a bit dramatic. Hence the name, diva.)
Needless to say, when my husband told me he wanted to start hiking with the kids, I needed some deep breaths. My experience with hiking left me cringing at the mere word. So as a compromise, my husband suggested that I should pick the trails. Fair enough!
And that’s how this family of 6 found ourselves hiking in the desert. I’m happy to report that even the biggest frowns at the start of our trip ended up in smiles, so all in all, I’m going to count this one a win.
And guess what?! We’re going to do it again! Turns out hiking isn’t so bad. I can admit when I’m wrong. I can also admit I’m WAY better at picking out trails than my dad! 😜🤣
