With all the excitement brewing for the 49th annual Super Bowl, there’s no surprise that people don’t want to dampen the mood with talk of the dark underbelly of that day. Even though I am far from what you would call a sports fan, I am rooting my home team on to the win (Go hawks!). But luring in the shadows of the Super Bowl spotlight is the dark truth that is a sad reality to tens of thousands of women and children.
The Super Bowl has been dubbed as “the single largest human trafficking incident in the U.S.”. (Source) Although there has been constant disputes over that claim and the staggering statistics that follow it, there is no denying that the enormity of the Super Bowl is a magnet for sex-trafficking.
While human trafficking is an issue we need to fight every day of the year, surges like this are a good reminder that we need to be part of the solution, not the problem. Each of us can make a difference.
Since my dear friend Cat, along with her amazing family, are joining the fight against human trafficking with Zoe International, I thought she would be a great resource. She is going to share with us a little about what their family is doing about the growing sex-trafficking business, as well as some ways you can join the fight.
Cat, would you be willing to share with us what your family will be doing with Zoe starting this Spring?
We have decided to move our family to Chiang Mai, Thailand to join the fight against human trafficking. Kenny will join a child rescue team with ZOE International. Kenny has been working for the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office for 10 years this May. He will use his skills in law enforcement to help the Thai police rescue children from the sex trade. Catherine is a teacher, and will help with the children’s aftercare. ZOE not only rescues children from the sex trade, but they give them a home and an education. You can join the fight too! You can join our team and become a one-time, or monthly supporter, by going to www.gozoe.org/besks You can join our prayer team, and intercede for our family as we go on this journey.
Well we are so excited for this next adventure in your life. Thank you so much for sharing with us today. Through our conversations, I know that there are uncertainties and fears that come with a leap in faith like this. But I am confident that God is going to use your family in huge ways for the glory of His kingdom! Thank you for being willing to sacrifice so much and following God wherever He leads you! You and your family are such an inspiration to us.
So maybe this leads you wondering…
What can I do???
First, educate yourself. Maybe you didn’t think this was really that big of a problem. But the statistics show quite the opposite – it is a growing problem! Research it yourself and you will see.
Second, be a voice. How can we stay silent when we know the truth about the reality of so many? YOU have a voice – use it! Advocate for those who can’t speak for themselves.
Third, get involved. Support companies who are fighting this fight. Become an educated consumer. Volunteer your time and talents.
If you would like to support the Besk family in their fight against Human trafficking, they are in need of sponsors to financially support their mission and their family monthly. While they have an ultimate goal of 100 supporters at $65/month…even a one time donation would be a great help to them.
If you would like to find out more about the Besks and follow their amazing journey, you can find them on their blog or Facebook.
Thank you, dear readers, for joining me here today. Please – enjoy your Super Bowl Sunday! Cheer on your team and celebrate with your family and friends. But I urge you not to forget those in the shadows, longing for an escape from a life they never chose. Join us in advocating for their freedom and putting a stop to human trafficking.
